Fiction Writing: May 14–July 16
Learn the art of writing from a master at his craft
Service Description
Through the magic of imagination, fiction takes us deep inside worlds and into the lives of characters. This workshop course teaches students to recognize the qualities that make for spellbinding fiction, including the natural rhythm and tone, mapping the structure, and shaping the content. The short story exemplifies a unique genre of writing. This workshop teaches the essential short story elements: sketching a story, creating a compelling opening, devising structure and plot twists, incorporating tension, implementing flashback and viewpoint, and mastering the art of dialogue. Students learn techniques of crafting fiction, originating colorful characters, and developing ways of bringing imagination and intrigue into a literary work. Students will learn how their stories can be woven into unforgettable narratives. In addition to writing exercises, students will complete four short stories and receive feedback from Alaa Al Aswany and peers. It is recommended that students take the Reading Fiction workshop with the Fiction and Short Story Writing workshop.
